Meet the Moths

These wondrous beauties are why we do it! We at Cecropian cant think of a better day then one caring for such scientifically and visually stunning insects. This is just the beginning of our breeding project and as the anticipation builds for another breeding season, Cecropian is so excited to share all our progress along the way.

Winter Season Projects

Winter is a moth breeders off season. With no food plants to eat, pupa begin to spin cocoons and enter diapause, a dormant state in which the larva stays until spring leaves emerge. This six month waiting period is packed with anticipation as the moths development is now out of our hands, while we eagerly prepare for the next brood.

To offset the year-round project costs Cecropian’s owner designs, makes, and sells one of a kind rugs featuring the moths we sell. We also make rugs featuring non-native and rare moth species from outside the US.

Our rugs can be purchased here on the Cecropian website, or in-person at The Butterfly Place (check out the about us page for store info). Custom rug orders are welcomed and can be requested using the link below.

How It’s Made?

All our rugs are hand made by the Cecropian team using hypoallergenic acrylic fiber. The durability and hygienic properties of acrylic yarn make it the superior choice for all-weather rugs that will stand up to spot washing with mild detergent. The underside of our rugs are sealed using waterproof, pet-safe carpet adhesive and are finished with textured, non-slip, felt backing. Rugs can be shaved by hand to sculpt depth and texture into the surface using a process known as carving. Carving rugs requires a high level of finesse and require more time to produce.

Pricing and Add-ons

Cecropian rugs are priced according to their size, pile height, and custom add-ons selected at check out. Our prices reflect the hourly time spent hand making the rugs. Our size categories correlate to the overall dimensions, relative time spent tufting, shaving, and materials needed to back each rug. A rug’s pile height is the thickness of the rug, or more specifically, the length of the yarn fibers. The thicker the rug, the more yarn it will require. The complexity and size of a rug will also effect the price and the processing time for made-to-order rugs.
