Raising Silk
Moths
North America is home to some of the largest silk moths in the world. Sadly, recorded sightings of wild silk moths are very rare, and little is known about the more elusive and isolated species. Cecropian was created to support the local native silk moth populations and share the inspiring beauty of these fascinating insects. Our moth breeding is paired with a controlled release schedule to return 50% of our stock to their endemic range and support the next years population of wild healthy moths. Part of Cecropian’s mission is to continuously supply local butterfly conservatories with silk moth cocoons, in an effort to make North American silk moths available to everyone who wants to enjoy them. During cocoon spinning seasons, cocoons will be available for purchase to anyone who wants to witness a silk moth’s eclosure in your own home!

Perhaps the best part of being a moth breeder is getting to see the ephemeral beauty of every life stage. By subscribing to our Cecropian Club, you will get full access to the Cecropian digital photo gallery. All of our photos are taken by Cecropian using a Nikon Z50II with an Astrhori tilt-shift insect lens and a Gauge-TinyWorld flash diffuser. Prints of our photography can be purchased upon request and either shipped to your home or picked up in person at The Butterfly Place in Westford, MA. Enjoy the experience of The Butterfly Place located at 120 Tyngsboro Rd. Westford, MA, and afterward you can find our cocoons and rugs and other Cecropian merch for sale in the gift shop. The profits from all sales of our cocoons and rugs goes towards supporting the next years brood of moths. As seasonally availability of cocoons fluctuates, Cecropian shifts to making rugs in the off season.
